SOUTHERN NEWS.

Last night. The Hon. R. Seddon arrived at Napier by the express train and coaches from Auckland, and proceeded by tbe express train on Wednesday evening to Wellington, where his presence was urgently required by the Cabinet.

Lady Onslow and two daughters arrived in Napier on Wednesday evening from Taupo, and proceeded by the train yesterday morning to the West Coast to[meet Lord Onslow, and they will then go on"to Wellington. Negotiations for the purchase of tire Palmerston North gas works by a Wellington syndicate are almost completed. As applications have been received all over the colony for treatment by Koch’s tuberculins, the Dunedin Hospital Trustees have decided to arrange for a further supply. The salaries ot telegraph operators will be raised from £l5O to £l7O a year. Long service hands, say of 15 years, will be kept only two years at this maximum, passing then to a higher grade. Operators who have entered the Department as messengers will be allowed to count their service from commencement.

£40,000 is the amount estimated to be lost to the colony through the reduction of the postage. It covers also the reduction of the newspapers from a penny to a halfpenny intercolonially. The appointments of Judge Ward to be Judge of the District Court ot Westland, and ot Mr L. Broad to’,be B M. and Registrar of tbe Supreme Court of Nelson, are gazetted. At a stock sale in Masterton, tbe prices for sheep ruled higher than previously obtained.
