THE Marton Mercury, which occupies an independent position in politics, has a scathing article an the meanness that certain journals are showing in their attacks upon the Ministry. The Mercury thus impales these writers for their style of fighting :—We believe in fair play, and in one respect Mr McKenzie has not had, and is not having, that fair play which every Englishman should show to every other Englishman, and. for that matter, to everybody. It was first hinted and then openly stated by certain journals that Mr Ritchie (Chief inspector of Block), was
about to become a connection by marriage of Mr McKenzie, and that theappointment was therefore merely a nice little family job. The widest circulation was given to this rumour, and an ocean of turgid denunciation was poured out on the subject. A point blank contradiction of the report—in which it now appears there was not one tittle of truth —has been published in the Post, and the lie is squelched for the readers of that journal. But how many of the more bitter Opposition papers have reproduced the contradiction ? We have searched our exchanges carefully, and we find that not more than one in every three have had the manliness to correct the false report they had so industriously assisted in circulating ! If this be fair play in politics, what can foul play be like ?
