In our advertising columns Messrs Maguire and Company quote a few of their prices to show the great advantage people have in patronising the firm. The now celebrated Farmer Jones is to the fore again. The other day he picked up in his crop of barley a couple of stalks, one with three ears on and the other with two. Mr Whitehouse, representative of the well known Auckland tailoring firm of G, Mcßride, is now on a visit to Gisborne, for tbe purpose of receiving orders, He may be communicated with at ibe Masonic Hotel, or through the post office.

The quarterly Government inspection o' the East Coast Hussars by Major Woods took place last evening. There were 33 members present. At the conclusion of tbe inspection, Major Woods complimented the troop on their good physique and so’dier-like appearance. He remarked that the carbines were a bit worn, and that interfered with their shooting. The band was also present under Bandmaster Morrison, and played some eeleotione.

A draft of a mob of cattle on their way to Palmerston North passed through the town yesterday morning. An unmanageable steer broke away from the mob, and had a wild scamper over the Whataupoko side, a great chase taking place. The animal broke through a number of gardene, and before it was capture I did more damage than it was worth. Tbe cattle were not driven through the town at a proper time ; they got scattered on account of the number of people about, and the drovers had much trouble, while many people were frightened and put to considerable inconvenience. Some of the animals got floundering in the mudbank near the gasworks.

A murder trial had ended in Wichita, Kansas, and the jury had been out fifty-two hours. Tbe Judge got tired of waiting and had a minister sent into the jury-room, where be commenced religious services, the jury joining in the singing. Then the reverend gentleman delivered an hour's discourse, and, after a closing prayer, left the jnry to themselves. Soon after the jury announced that they had arrived at an agreement, and when they came into court reported that they found the defendant “ guilty I’’ This is conceded to be a wonderful tribute to the efficacy of prayer, but the result hardly shows that prayer had turned the jurymen’s hearts towards mercy.
