The Chinese Government refuse to receive Mr Blair as the United States Minister at Pekin. Again influenza is spreading in London, and threatens to become very serious. Many deaths occured from it in York and Sheffield. The people of Honolulu are clamoring for a Republic, and are threatening the Queen. Copiapo has been captured by insurgents of Chili. There are signs of the strike at Scottdale collapsing, and the movement for a general strike for eight hours has been postponed. The Archbishop of Cork is prostrate with influenza. O’Connor challenges Stansbury to row for ,£5OO a-side in America, allowing the champion £2OO for expenses. In the Chamber of Deputies M. Lockroy made an energetic defence in favor of free trade, and condemned the abolition of commercial treaties. Forty vessels forced the blockade and carried bait to the islands of St. Pierre, which belongs to France. The desire for annexation in Newfoundland has increased owing to Lord Knutsford’s Bill. A number of Anarchists have arrived in Turin and Milan, and it is said that they are inciting the soldiers to shoot their officers.
It is reported that Mapleson has offered Madame Melba £30,000 for a two seasons' tour through the United States. The Standard fears that riots will take place in France, Spain, and Austria to-day (May Day), in connection with the mass meetings of workmen which have been called. Baron Hirsch’s fortune is estimated at between twenty and thirty millions sterling. The Pall Mall Gazette says his scheme for emigration of the Russian Jews provides for the deportation of half a million to Brazil and Australia. Baron Hirsch and other wealthy Jews are consulting Russian representatives in Paris relative to the best method of removing their compatriots from Russia. In the meantime 4000 Jews have been ordered to leave Kieff. Russia has consented to a reduction of the cable rates. Four hundred thousand pounds’ worth of damage was caused by the recent gunpowder explosion in Rome, but of course much has been lost that money cannot replace. By an explosion in a dynamite factory in Genoa five girls were killed and over fifty others wounded, more or less seriously. By a majority of 61 the House of Commons has affirmed the principle of paying compensation to publicans whose licenses are cancelled,
