Mr Seddon Justified.
CO OPERATION, NOT PAUPERISM. Wellington, last night. The Miners’ Conference at Greymouth wired warmly thanking Mr Seddon and the Government for their action in engaging unemployed on productive works on the cooperative principle. Mr Seddon replied that the Government recognised their duty in the matter. He believes that the co-operative system will become universal in the near future. He suggests the disuse of the term unemployed, as in its general application it refers to those for whom the Government found unproductive work at pauper rates of pay, in return for which the State was rewarded with the Government stroke in the work done. At a meeting of the Wellington Trades Council last night it was decided to convey their thanks to the Minister of Public Works, for introducing the co-opsrative sytem amongst unemployed, and suggesting if the system proved to be a success that he should introduce it in large works.
