The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Thursday, February 19, 1891. THE NATIVE COMMISSION.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy ocuntry’g, Thy God’s, and truth’s,

Too much prominence cannot be given to this subject, in the hope of arousing public interest in its work. We understand that the Commission will be glad to obtain the opinions of all men whose knowledge and experience fairly entitle them to give an opinion on the vexed question of native titles. It will therefore be well for all those who feel an interest in the subject to carefully think it out at leisure, and if they go before the Commission to give expression to their views those views should be the product of serious study, and not merely surface ideas taking the crudest form. In making its report the Commission will be mainly guided by the weight of opinion, and by the conclusions to which their enquiries may lead. This enables all persons whose opinion is worth having to give expression to their views through a channel in which they will find due weight. There is now a complete unanimity on the point that a great reform is required, and the Commission is undoubtedly the best scheme that could be devised to try and get a concensus of opinion as to what direction that reform should take. We would strongly advise those concerned to be well prepared to assist the Commission in its enquiries, without causing it unnecessary loss of time.
