ARRIVALS. The Union Company’s steamer Mararoa (Captain Chatfield), from Sydney, Bussell, and Auckland, came into port at 1.15 on Saturday afternoon, after a splendid run down the coast of 23( hours. Passengers: Mrs Good and child, Mrs Reed, Misses Cox, Wright, Reed, and Johnstone, Messrs Johnson, Roskridge, Butler, Keru, Wright, Cummings, Johnstone, Stafford, and Aldridge. The Union Company’s steamer Wairarapa arrived in the bay yesterday morning, from Melbourne, Hobart, and Southern ports, bringing—Mesdames Wallace and infant, Field, Williams, Braithwaill, Bridget and infant, Hughes and 5 children, and Saunders, Misses Bower, Creba, Wilson, Bailey, and Saunders, Messrs D. Murray, B. Murray, Field, Bourke, Windsor. Barry, Ward, Niccoll, Newman, Lysnar, W. F. Crawford, Good, Muir, Loudon, Chrisp (2), Witty, Skeet (2), Morgan, Kennedy, Burbe, McDoogan, Ihindson, Spurdie, Dr Heale, and one Chiuaman. The Union Company’s coastal steamer Australia, from Wellington and Napier, arrived here on Saturday morning. Passengers: Misses Trimmer (2). Newman, Black, and Tattersall, Hon. J. B. Whyte, Messrs Smith and son, Banner, Gibbs, Brassey, Trimmer, Brooke-Taylor, Marr, Harvey, Higgins, and Hansen (2). DEPARTURES. The Australia steamed on to Auckland at 1 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. Passenger: Mr Stubbs. The Mararoa resumed her voyage South on Saturday evening, taking—Mrs Skeet and infant, Mrs Skipworth and two children, Mrs Whitlock and child, Mr and Mrs H. E. Johnston and two children, Misses Biack, Mclntoab, Wallis, Mills, McKee, Brown, White, and Walters, Master Mclntosh, Archdeacon Williams, Messrs F, Faram,Ferguson, S»rle, J. Bresnahan, Mowatt, McKee, McKenzie, Chrisp, and Tiffen. The Wairarapa resumed her passage North yesterday morning, taking—Mesdames Moran, Bergeson, West, and South, Mr and Mrs Sedgewick, Mr and Mis Rosie, Miss Maude, Chief Judge Seth-Smilh, Messrs Mitlsop, Carrie, Brown, Colebourne, Rosie, Adjutant and Mrs Bishop, and one native. EXPECTED ARRIVALS. Awaroa, topsail schooner, from Mercury Bay. Opawa, ship, from London, via Lyttelton. Waiwera, schooner, from Mercury Bay. Saucy Kate, echooner, from Greymouth. Venus, cutter, from Napier.
The Union Company are having two sister chips to the Tavinui built, and these are expected to arrive in the colony about July. The capacity of each will be above 1250 tons. The vessel for Fiji and New Zealand is being built by Messrs Denny Bros., Dumbarton, and is called the Ovalau. The new boat for the Samoan trade will be called the Upox, and is being built by Messrs Fleming and Fergueson, of Paisley. The Ovalau brings with her new boilers and engines for the Wakatipu. These are quadruple extension of the most modern type. The Union Company have decided to take up the permanent running between New Zealand and Calcutta. Special steamers have been chartered to load in Calcutta in June, and return from New Zealand with a load of horses in August, but next year it is intended to build a vessel of 4500 tons capacity, which will be specially designed and fitted for the eastern trade.
