A Romantic Cook.
[SPECIAL TO THE BTANDAUD.j Nafieb, last night.
On Saturday afternoon a young man named Leon Dargus, second cook at the Masonic Hotel, attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself into the sea. He got well out, and beyond the surf line, and then sank, but rose twice. An alarm woe immediately raised by young Smith, eou of the landlord of the Masonic, and Mr Bart. McKay pluckily swam out to Dargus, who was floating in an insensible state, and brought him in,being assisted in dragging him to shore by young Smith and others. Dargus was then taken to the police station, where he was attended by Drs DeLisle and Innee, and subsequently was removed to the Napier Hospital, where in the oourea of the night ha regained consciousness, It is believed he had taken a dose of poison before attempting to drown himself, and that the endeavors made to restore animation by inducing vomiting saved his life. He is a native of Mauritius, and the cause of his attempting suicide was the refusal of a young woman to receive his attentions. He deserted from the ship on which lie came to Napier, and swam from her to the shore. He was brought up at the Magistrate's Court this morning and remanded for a week,
