In the Napier News “Touchstone” puts that card cheating scandal very neatly, showing the ludicrous side of such an affair :—“ They’re 1 going it,’ that beautiful British aristocracy. The latest scandal is that a real live baron has been caught cheating at cards whilst playing in company with the Prince of Wales. Phew 1 Cheating the Heir Apparent, eh. Surely H.R.H. ought to choose his company better than to hobnob with jokers who turn up the king too often at ccarte or who pack the cards at baccarat. The culprit has fled the country. Very likely. When a man’s caught at cardsharping it’s all over with him in English swell society. If he had only knocked his wife about like the Duke of Marlborough did, or is a known roue or an open turf swindler he’s received just the same, but cheating at cards —ah, that’s an unpardonable crime.”
