AUCKLAND. L»st night. Mr Rees is considered pretty certain of return for Auckland city. James Roycroft, a small boy, fell into the river at Thames, and was drowned. Sir George Grey bas improved somewhat in health, but he absolutely refuses to re-enter political life. The body of a dead seaman, fully clad, was found on the beach at Kaipara, Mr Robert Horne, a well known resident of Tauranga, died very suddenly of appoplexy. Mr J. M. Shera has been chosen to fill the vacancy for a Liberal candidate occasioned by the retirement of Sir G, Grey. Me Phillips, a wall known evange'ist, died at Hoi folk Island about a mouth ago. The South British Insurance Company shareholders met to-day and agreed to a reduction of capital, as proposed at the recent annual meeting. The Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand are holding sittings here. At the first meeting the Grand Master advocated that recognition be extended by the Grand Lodge to England and Scotland. The Kermadec Island settlers, who are principally Hawke’s Bay people, returned from Sunday Island by the Hinemoa to day, the settlement having proved a disastrous failure. SOUTHERN NEWS. Hast night. The Hon. Mr Fergus has been returned Unopposed for Wakatipu. A man named Hy. Allen died at Dunedin Hospital last /night from the result of in juries received by falling downstairs, having been seized with an anpoplectic fit. A New South Wales settler named Teal has been discovered to be heir to a sum of £21,000.000 which has been locked up in Chancery. The weather continues distressingly dry at Oamaru, the farmers are crying out that tbeir crops will be ruined it the rain holds off much longer. The Bishop of Nelson is seriously ill. He is suffering from congestion ot the brain.
