Mr Crombie’s Appointment.
Whiting of Mr Crombie’s appointmant the Wellington correspondent of the Lyttelton Times says Mr Crombie, the Depu’yOommissioner, having been put into the vacancy caused by the death of the Commissioner, there is considerable satisfaction in tbe place at what we consider ths legitimate course of promotion. Mr Crombie is a very capable and painstaking official; a man who in his time has played many part?, Amongst others, he played the part of journalist nearly twenty years ago in O'ago. In those days he was chief reporter on the paper famous as the Otago Guardian, when Mr Creighton, now of San Francisco fame, was editor, and after Mr Crombie went to San Francisco to make that particular fame of his, the glory of Vincent Pyke was over the Guardian, and in that halo Mr Crombie worked hard, not for fame—that was the editor’s perquisite—but for firtune, of which ha acquired the nucleus. Bit what nucleus ever satisfied a man of praiseworthy ambition? Mr Crombie Aiding that the nucleus did not develop with sufficient rapi lily, took hh talents to a country district. The talents were the first shorthand man in Otago, and a good sound leader-wri*ing capacity. With these and sundry doubloons he started a brisk weekly or bi-weekiy, I forget which. It was in ths rising town ot Palmerston or Waikouaiti -it really dues not matter which, nor what tbe name of the little journal was, for it had a dismal, ghastly history, ungainly, grim and gaunt, that is h to say, it took away ths duubloons from poor Crombie and left him with the reporting faculty and tbe leader capacity, beth much sharpened by adversity. 80 the indomi able owner of this equipment struggled on, and presently rising to the surface, was hailed by a circle of admiring minds as Deputy-Com-missioner of the Property Tar Department. Now that be has become Oommiseioner he will be as much appreciated by the general public as he was the other day by the circle of admiring friends.
