Th© Unions have decided to support the voting of subsidies to the gas tstokers on strike. it is understood that the New Zealand Shipping Company is about to issue .£300,000 worth of 5 percent debentures to liquidate a mor’gage by Mr Dawes, and provide £lOO,OOO additional capital. It is expected that t2 p<*r share will be written off for the pu-pose of enabling a dividend to te. paid ia April. The report of the Parnell Commission has been completed, and is in print. It will be presented to the speaker at the opening of the Sea-ion of Pfirliament. An action for Wrongful arrest, brought by Thompson, a man supposed to b-‘ a deserter fiom the Calliope, against Captain Woodward, of H.M.S. Duse of Wellington, has been compromised.
Mrs Fitzgeorge, wife of the Duke of Cambridge, is dead. Cardinal Manning wrote to Mr Burns in November, protesting against the surplus of the strike funds osing expended in indiscriminate charity. He advised that the money should be handed to a benefit society for the permanent advantage of the dockers. ■ Mr Barns st»tes that the Meluourn© remittance has been vested in five members of the Uuion for the relief of the distress. Lisbon, Jan. 14. M. Petre awaits a reply from the Portuguese Government to the British ultimatum. He is on board the despatch boat Enchantress at Vigor Bay. He insists on a categorical acceptance of every demand of Lord Salis ■ bury.
The Portuguese are amazed at the suddenness of the ultimatum, when negotiationt were apparently progressing towards & settlement.
