HARBOR BOARD.

Ax ordinary meeting of the above took place on Tuesday evening, there being present • Captain Tucker (chairman) Messrs SheltonArthur, Bennstt, Clark, Townley, Dr Pollen. The correspondence was only of a general nature.

A oomtpanipotion was received from the Government informing the Beard that it had been gazetted under the public Works Act, Messrs Nelson Bros, wrote complaining that they ware being charged wharfage on coal used for the freezing hulk, the! coal being used merely for local purposes, and it not being fair to charge both ways on the same goods. They also asked that the spans of the bridge be painted with luminous paint, and the river channel defined with stakes. The Chairman said it would bs as fair to charge tbe light ten for the coal they took out tor their own use. Mr Shelton pointed out that oogl might be shipped into the bulk, The Chairman slid the coal on which they asked tor a rebate must already have been paid wharfage on. Mr Clark thought the request was a very reasonable one, and on being put to the meeting it was unanimously agreed to. In regard to tbe second request it was decided, bn the suggestion df Mr Townley, that the Harbormaster confer with Captain Kennedy as to what was required to be done, and if the cost dues not exceed £25 that the work be proceeded with. Messrs Nelson Bros, also requested permission to pay the wharfages monthly, The Secretary said at present it was just a matter with the wharfinger. Everything was supposed to be cash—it w a ’ too wharfinger's own concern whether be allowed qny accommodation. The Freezing Company's wharfages came to about £lO a week, Mr Townley thought the request should be acceded to, Mr Sbelton and tbe Chairman considered 1c would be better to leave the matter to tbe wharfinger. Mr Clark said the firm should not be in the position of having to ask favors from the wharfinger. The industry was an established one and although the Board might depart from custom, he thought it would be perfectly reasonable to grant the request. The Chairman moved that the matter re, main as it 1 Mr Shelton seconded. Ho thought it would not be right to establish a precedent upon which tqerchanta would feel justified in asking the same privilege, Dr Pollen at first opposed the motion, but afterwards expressed bls opinion that it would be better not to establish such a precedent as would be made if the privilege were conceded, He would support the amendment if a rule were made that all parsons who paid wharfages above a fixed sum should h»ve the same advantage. Mr Bennett considered it was not right to put tbe Board's-responsibility on to the wharfinger, and the Industry was one which ought to be supported, and that unnecessary obstacles should not be placed in the way of the promoters of |t, Mr Arthur supported the application, Mi Townley moved that the request * u9 acceded to. He did nqt tiqinlq toey gqqld g!Y§ 9 to? Ths stuff all went out whhgilt the wbarf He did not thluk any firm could claim to ba allowed the same privilege, because the oases would be quite distinct. Mr Bennett seconded. The Chairman would ogres to ths motion provided a certain sum were stated and no exceptions made, Mr Bennett said it was time enough to do that when asked,

Mr Townley wished there vf«re a good many other firms contributing the same amount to the revenue.

The amendment was lost on the Chairman's casting vote, there being for i Messrs Townley, Bennett and Artbur; against: The Chairman, Mr Shelton, and Dr Pollen. Mr Clark had previously left the room. Messrs Common, Shelton and Co wrote asklug on what terms the Board would lease a portion bl the foreshore neqr the Fire Brigade shedThe Chairman said the Board could only let the property by public tender. Mr Shelton asked would the Board take the nsual course of offering the foreshore tor lease?

It was decided on the motion ot Sir Bennett, that toe matter be submitted to'a Committee consisting of Messrs Townley, Btevwright, and Bennett, On Mr Shelton's suggestion it was agreed that the Commute report as to ths whois tore shore.
