The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning

Saturday, January 26, 1889. NEW ZEALAND’S OPPORTUNITY.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at bo thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

Much has been said and written about “ New Zealand’s oppotunity,” the expression having reference to the mild famine which has been caused in Australia by the drought, and the chance which is thus afforded to New Zealand farmers to reap a rich harvest by the increased prices. Poverty Bay has been almost completely shut out from the prospects thus held forth, owing to the high freights and want of shipping facilities. By the enterprise of Mr. W. King, however, a test will shortly be made by a direct shipment to Sydney. Mr. King has despatched 50*000 feet of timber in bulk, 200 tons of chaff, 10 tons of hay, and a quantity of potatoes, about so tons more of potatoes being required to complete the cargo. If the shipment turns out as successfully as it is anticipated it will, there will be much reason to congratulate the charterer on his enterprise. Every pounds’ worth of produce that goes out of the place, and of which the equivalent is returned, must help towards the advancement ,of the district, and give increased zest to the development of its resources. We sincerely hope that Mr

King’s enterprise will be well rewarded, and that he will receive every support I from his fellow settlers. While on this] subject we may allude to the informa-1 tion which is conveyed to us by telegram I that Mr Rees has been so far successful in his efforts in England that the first batch of settlers are now on their way to New Zealand. If Mr Rees has considerably modified his ideas, and made his scheme more practical than that which we recently published, we have good hopes that he will achieve success, but otherwise we can only view the new phase of affairs with alarm, as we have no wish to see the labor market here in a more distressed condition than it has been of late. However, all we can do is to hope Mr Rees will be successful in all that he undertakes.
