ROWING NOTES.

The second heat of the double sculls was rowed off on the Taruheru river on Thursday evening, Green and Clayton and Ratcliffe and Trimmer being the competing crews. Ratcliffe was the favorite, and certainly his style of sculling justified the confidence placed in him, though many doubted the powers of his partner to row a fast race. Green,* on the other hand, also had many who placed great faith in him, on account of previous sue•cesses, but the race was not a satisfactory test of the powers of either crew. Both crews started off with a very quick stroke, Green soon forging to the front, and when reaching the footbridge had a lead of several lengths, which he comfortably maintained to the finish. Soon after the pair-oars had passed the jetty the final heat of the junior fours was rowed between Bourn’s and Miller’s crews, the favorites in this instance winning easily. Bourn assumed the lead at the start, and though Miller made an effort near the bridge he was unable to reach Bourn, who won comfortably. The steering of the coxswains in the losing boats in both races was very erratic, and they were continually crossing from one side of the river to the other, while in both cases the winning coxswains’ steering was excellent, and they decreased the distance as muoh as possible. The double-sculls final was last night won by a length and a halHy Greene and ulayton against Teat.
