AQUATICS.
NEW ZEALAND YACHT IN MELBOURNE Melbourne, Nov 21. The yacht Akarana, owned and built in Auckland, won the St. Kilda Club's gold medal. The following letter from C. Petley, of Ponsonby, one of the crew of the crew of the yacht Akarana, to a friend in Auckland, is taken from the Auckland Star :—“ We had a grand sail iu the Akarana on Saturday and Sunday. Her crew is W Landie (an Auckland boy), Rackstraw (who used to be in the Waitemara 8.C.). W. Farquahar, and myself. The first Saturday we were out we had a spin with all the other yachts. It was blowing a strong southerly breeze, and some of the yachts were reefed down while we earned whole sail, standing up like a duck, and went through a rather heavy sea. We had to cling on like opossums, or we would have been washed overboard. Jack Bell kept ahead of the lot and would not let any of them’ catch ue, There were about a dozen yachts after us. Nearly all the Sydney yachts are here preparing for the race. There are some pretty fair yachts amongst them, but I don't think any of them will some up to our little craft. The yachtsmen hire think a lot of her, and told L°g an 1 10 could teach them a wrinkle in yacht building. We are going in for two races; the first con es off on Friday, 23rd Ncvember, and the ot leron the Saturday. Loti of people want to euy her, but Logan won’t part with her unti’ after the race; then he wants to sail her >n Sydney.” Mr Logan, owner and builder, immmands the yacht, and Captain Bell acts as sailing master. GISBOBNE ROWING. The final heat of the Rowing Club’s Trial-fours was rowed on Tuesday evening, between Spurdie’s and Green’s crews. Those who had anticipated a very close finish were disappointed, as Green’s crew took the lead at the start and were never caught, winning comfortably by about five lengths. The defeat ot Spurdie’s crew and the distance they were beaten by caused some surprise, as they were a much heavier crew than their opponents, and it was generally thought they would win. THE REGATTA CLUB.
At a meeting of the Regatta Club Committee on Tuesday evening the names of Messrs W. F. Crawford, E. Harris, W. Grey, and T, J. Dickson were added to the Committee. It was also decided that the Committee canvass the town and country for subscriptions and report at next Committee meeting to be held at the Argyll Hotel on the 28th inst., and that a programme be drawn up at the next meeting, to be submitted to the general meeting to be held on December 1 at the Albion 'Club Hotel,
