The Langstone Fire.
Napier, last night. The agents of the barque Langstone have presented the Napier and Spit fire brigades with a cheque for £25 each for services rendered.
The Hicks-Sawyer Minstrels open in McFarlane's Hall to morrow evening, and also perform on Saturday night. A correspondent asks if it is a fact that the Harbor Engineer intends bringing back into the district a number of young fellows who were previously engaged on tbe works. The Government have notified tbe Whataupoko Road Board that they have been successful in securing the loan of £2500, and that the amount will be forwarded as aoon as the works are commenced.
The Fire Brigade had a wet practice last evening. At a subsequent meeting it was decided that fifteen of the members, including Supt. Townley, should enter for the Firemen’s Base, at the Hospital Sports. Mrs Rhodes, of Wellington, has donated £lOO for the purpose of adding a bell to the striking apparatus of the new Post-office clock. If the money were devoted to charitable purposes, or some worthy object, instead of to a clanging clock bell, it might be the be t X ppreeiated. A Melbourne telegram states On Satur day night an encounter took place between Chinese and larrikins. One of the former was held down, and a laborer named Cutler jumped on his chest and killed him. Cutler has been arrested. Mr G. H Swan has beeneleoted Mayor of Napier unopposed, this being his fourth term. There was a hrge number of workmen present at the Harbor Board meeting on Tuesday evening, to watch the proceedings. One well k> own gentlercan was made very conspicuous by a placard that was pinned on his back, with the inscription, " One of the Unemployed,” and even after the meeting was all over the victim was unaware of the amusement that people Wore having at his expense.
