Settlement of Lands in Hawke’s Bay.
PERPETUAL LEASE SYSTEM. Napier, last night. It was stated at a meeting of the Waste Land Board to-day that over 183,000 acres of land have been taken up in the Hawke’s Bay land district during last month. The Chairman said he never knew of such a quantity being taken up in that period. Most of the land was taken up under the perpetual lease system. Mr Hall said this system seemed to be better liked by the public than the other system. Mr Carnell said this was the system which had been so much abused everywuere. The Chairman said the perpetual lease was a misnomer j it was simply a conditional freehold, and it was pleasing to note so much land had been taken up under its provisions.
