HARBOR BOARD.

As ordinary meeting of the above was held ou Tuesday evening. Present: The Chairman and Messrs Gannon, Townley, Dickson, Clark, Murphy, and Matthewaon. ths POLL. The Returning Officer gave a detailed statement of the result of the poll with regard to the expenditure of the £40,000. Mr Gannon thought the purport of tbe poll and its result should be printed and a copy sent to each member of Parliament. As they would have to go to Parliament next session, they should have matters represented in their true light. The object of his suggestion was to make members better acquainted with the opinion of the ratepayers. Mr Townley agreed with Mr Gannon, but it would be better to allow the matter to •‘.nd over for a time and then appoint a committee to draw up a statement. The poll itself, he believed, would have a good effect. Mr Dickson asked whether it would not be better to leave it until members were collected together. The matter then dropped. BOAD SIETaL. The Borough Council made an application for a supply of 2000 tons of crushed road metal. In reply to Mr Clark, the Engineer said it was a question whether there would be sufficient stone at the island to complete the wrrks: that was the only doubtful point. They had just about cleared all expenses for the supply of stone previously made. (Jr Townley said it would ba better for the Engineer to make a report at next meeting. There appeared to have been a much tetter supply of stone found at the island than the Engineer first contemplated. Mr Clark thought it would be a pity for the Board to embarrass itself to supply metal to the other bodies. Mr Townley moved that the Engineer report on the matter. Seconded by Mr Murphy, and carried. In reply to Mr Gannon, the Engineer said they were not using the crushers all the time. CBMBKT. Messrs Johnston and Co., Wellington, wrote offering to supply 1,300 casks of cement at 17s 6d per cask, delivered at the wharf duty Engineer said he had sufficient cement tolast for four or five months. Mr Gannon said probably by that time they would bo able to land the cement on the breakwater, which would mean a considerable

saving. It was resolved to decline the offer. HABBOB LIGHTS. The Committee appointed to consider the matter of whaif lighte reported that the expense could be reduced by giving less light, but they would not advise the impairing of ths efficiency of such important lights. They considered the watchman should attend to the trimming and lighting. Mr Matthewson said he objected to the waste of gas, but did not think the quality should be impaired. As he had previously mentioned, he had seen tbe jets baring all day, but that was the Gas Company’s trouble. Mr Townley said by the Board doing the lighting there would, as agreed to by the company, be a saving of the difference between £74 and £llO 15<. This course was agreed to. finance committee .- The Committee reported they considered the accounts of the Solicitor and Returning Officer as fair and reasonable, considering the Circumstances, Tbe Chairman said the solicitor's account appeared large, but on going into it the Finance Committee found that it was not only reasonable, but many things were done gratuitously which might have been charged for. The Returning Officer’s account, also, could not be fairly reduced. The first account was passed without further discussion, and the latter one was also passed, but Mr Matthewson took objection to an item of las, for a special constable. EXPORTS. Captain Bennett made a general report. The Engineer in his report advised the calling for tenders for a small cargo of coals, and also for a supply of cement, and further stated that the ironmongery conti act had expired. Decided that tenders be called for 70 to 100 tons of coal, and that tenders be called for 1000 tons of eement, tenders for the latter to ba in within a month, and delivery to be taken at the anchorage.
