Saturday, November 17, 1888. STONE FOR BUILDING PURPOSES.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thon aim’et at be thy country’s, Thy God's, and truth’s.

The people of this district require a great deal of working up before they can be induced to pay proper attention to those industries which help to make a young place prosperous and great. The discovery of stone in this district has not up till lately been attended with the immediate results which were naturally wished for it, but there now seems a prospect of great results being achieved in this direction. A large number of different samples of stone had been procured, but each appeared to have some fault, the main one being the doubt as to quantity obtainable. When Mr Hill was here he expressed himself highly pleased with one particular sample (obtained from Mr McLennan’s property), which he classed above all the others for building purposes, and was, he considered, much superior to that imported from Oamaru, the doubt being whether it could ba obtained in sufficient quantity, Mr Stewart felt assured that this could be done, and with a diligence and perseverance which truly do him much credit, he continued his prospecting, and now is confident that he lias been thoroughly successful, This is the kind of spirit which everyone must admire, and we hope that the prospectors will reap a due reward, We do not profess to be competent judges of the stone, but there is the best of authority for stating that the material will yet form a valuable article for export as well as for local use. Mr Wbiuray, we understand, sent an order to Oamaru previous to the sample alluded to having been found in quantity, but there ought surely to be a certain market forjit. A block of the stone is on view at the| Standard office, and anyone interested, or who cares to take an interest in the subject, is invited to inspect it. It those directly concerned consult their own interests they will see that specimens of the stone are dis. played at the local Exhibition and at the ■ Waipawa Exhibition, and no opportunity lost , to »4?srtisa it, ,
