“ Outrigger's ” notes have been crowded out. A ballot of Newcastle miners has been taken with tbe result that tbe masters’ terms were accepted by a majority of 200. The Hick-Sawyers minstrels have decided to play two nights in Gisborne on the 23rd and 24th Inst.

The Returning Officer has fixed Saturday next as the date on which he will receive nominations for the office of Mayor, While running in the Melbourne Cup race Ensign, the winner of the V.R.C. Derby, broke his leg and Spade Guinea sustained severe injuries. Both horses had to be destroyed. It is notified in the Gazette that on and alter Ist December next, at various ports, ineluding New Plymouth breakwater, Waitara, and Wanganui, 6d per ton extra will be charged on grain and other produce, where the loading or unloading is done by the Railway Department. A popular one shilling concert is to be given on the evening of Boxing Day, at Ormond, in aid of the Ormond School and of the excellent school drum and fife band, which is a great credit to Mr Harper and certainly deserving of all the support which the people of the district can afford it.

Tbe following persons are the successful tenderers for the delivery of mails to the places mentioned, for a term of two years:—Ormond, E. Whitlock; Patutahi, and three times weekly to Murewai, J. Dixon ; Gisborne and Awanui, Walker; Waimata, Richardson; Wairoa, Hori Hare; Whatatutu, Devery ; Post Office and Wharf, Ward; Awanui and Hicks Bay, W. G. Stinton.

In response to enquiries as to the retrenchment recently effected in connection with the County Council office expenses, we give the following information Capt. Winter (Engineer), £4OO per annum, reduced to £3OO, with the additional duty of slaughterhouse inspection and attention to thistles; Mr Warren (Clerk), £250, not reduced, but services of assistant (Miss Warren) dispensed with (£75). Archibald McGiven, a diver of Maguire’s contract at Wellington, was laying some blocks under water, when he was 'attacked by a good-sized octopus, which in spite of all his struggles chained him to one of the piles in the retaining wall, McGiven, however, had the good sense to remain quiet, and the octopus, whose arms measured quite nine feet, quitting its hold of the pile, was brought to the surface on the back of the diver. McGiven, who was until recently employed on the Gisborne harbor works, returned from Wellington yesterday .morning aud s ates that he received a severe shaking up. The octupus is now in the Wellington museum.

Orr v Hona te Huhu, claim £34 Is, costs £1 10s ; Mias Doran v Shsra and Shera, claim £lO, costs £2 16s ; A. Keefer v Miti He’.ekia, claim £6l4s Id, costs 10s; A. J. Willson v Ruru, claim £4 9s sd, costs Gs. In the ease Harbor Board v A. McKenzie, claim £l2 18s 9d, according to the decision on appeal, judgment was reduced by consent to the first instalment of rates, viz., £6 9s 3d, cost's £2 Hs. Judgment summons;—A. Allanach v. G. Parau, claim £8 Is 6d, ordered that the amount be paid forthwith, execution to be stayed till the 29th inst. Wingate, Burns and Co. V H. Staples, claim £6 0s 9.1, ordered that the claim be paid forthwith, execution to be stayed for 14 days. It is a hard task to try and please everybody, and journalists have good reason to know this, but there surely is a certain line which cannot be encroached on by those who have any delicacy of feeling, without at once discarding that delicacy. And we do think our local contemporary is guilty of the most exceedingly bad taste (if not much worse) in trying to rankle a terrible sore that afflicts the hearts of all who know the history of this district. One paragraph is not sufficient, but two are devoted by our contemporary in its last issue to heralding the sorrowful fact that to-day is the anniversary of the awful massacre of ’6B, and to make ths matter more distressing there is an attempt to arouse the slumbering spirit of vindictiveness against the aavsge instigator of the horrible deeds. Many of our settlers would to heaven that these dreadful spot? in the history of the past could be blotted from their pjinds instead of being rankled in this sickening way.
