The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, November 6, 1888. A DARK SIDE AND A BRIGHT SIDE.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

It is the reverse of satisfactory when one’s means of advancement are greatly assisted by another person’s misfortunes, and the same comparison may be applied in the case of one district being a gainer by another district’s losses. But when the former is in no way responsible for those losses, the circumstances are greatly altered. It is by the failure of the wheat crops in foreign places that the colonies have been able to derive the benefit of a rise in prices, and in a lesser degree the fearful drought in New South Wales promises to have an influence on the wool market. When we come to consider the beautiful season which has, so far, been granted the farmers of this district, and which is very nearly general throughout this colony, it is a terrible picture which we have presented to us from the sister colony. The most severe season that we could imagine in this district would not have the slightest comparison with the experiences which the New South Wales flock-owners are now, and have been frequently in the past, going through. Everywhere in this district things are looking magnificent, the season being the best that we have had for years past, and our main trouble is in the deficient facilities for export and the finding of payable markets afterwards. When we learn ot other places being afflicted in the terrible way that New South Wales is just now afflicted, it is about time the people of this district ceased prating about the times, and by united effort seek to achieve for this favored place the high position to which it is destined, and which, though the consummation may be retarded by our internal dissensions, must eventually be awarded to it.
