An Auckland firm has received from San Francisco a sample of tbe Arundo arenarina, or Holland grass, which is a true sand binder and admirably adapted to stay the progress of drifting sand. Captain Humfrey, assistant Under-Secretary of Defence, when in Auckland recently, had bis attention directed to this grass, and it occurred to him that it would be advisable to try it at the Dnnedin harbor (where there is a glacial drift of sand toward! some of the batteries), with a view of testing its efficiency, and with this view tbe flrm placed a quantity of the roots at bis disI posal. This plant is being used at the Golden Gate, Ban Franeisco, to stop the advance of drift uad upon a battery.
