VICTORIA RACING CLUB’S MEETING. SUSPICIOUS RIDING. Mblboubnz, Nov 5. The weather for the opening day of the Victorian Racing Ulus’s Spring Meeting was fine. The attendance was about 50,000. The racing throughout was very good, but the riding of Derritt in the Derby caused great dissatisfaction. Carbine was undoubtedly the best oolt in the Derby, and t he publio supported the New Zealander heavily. The win of Necklet in the Mary, byrnong Plate was an excellent performance, and the win was well received by the publio. The following are the results s—MZLBOUBKa STAKXS—IJ miISS. The race throughout was most exciting and was won by sheer gameness by half a length, a neck separating the second and third horses. Mains was fourth. Time, 2mins 12|secs. BOTH AM HANDICAP, 1J mile. Mara ... ... 1 Menotti ... ... ... ... ... 2 Touchstone 8 Eight others started, including Enfllads’ who carried 6s: lllbs. Won easily. MAUYBYBNONG PLATZ —5 f UrlongS. Mr J. Mirshall’e Necklet (O’Brien) ... 1 Mrs Browne’- Carrington (Ramage) ... 2 Hon J. White’s Rudolph (Hales) ... 3 Fifteen others started. Necklet, Rudolph, and Savernake had the best of a wretched start, but Mr Marshall’s filly never left the issue in doubt, and won easily by a length. Time, Imin 2}secs. V.R.C. Pearl Shell, Volley, Wycombe, and Aldivsllooh also started. The betting at the post wa» 7 to 4 against Carbine, 6 to 9 against Melos, fl to 1 against Pearl Shell, "to 1 against Ensign, and 10 to 1 against Volley. As the horses were drawing up in a line at rhe post, Volley lashed out and Yoked Carbine. On the fall of the flag Wycombe dashed away with the lead and made the running for Melos. Passing the sheds Wycombe was still at the head ot affairs, with Carbine handy. Approaching the home turn Carbine supplanted Wycombe, but was immediately challenged by Mr Gannon’s other candidate Melos, and as the horses turned into the straight Ihe latter had a little the beat of it, Carbine however, came again, and when once mors in front the race appeared a moral tor him. But when within tbs distance Hales brought up Ensign, and completely out.geuoralling Dsrritt, won by a head, Tima 3min 45Ja<or, The Coburg Stakes was won by the Hon J White's Plutarch. The Melbourne Cup will be run to-morrow. There are 31 starters. Whakawai is ths favorite.
