Thursday, November 1, 1888. ON THE STRAIGHT ROAD.
Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.
The Harbor Board appear at last to have got on the best line in a narrow and tortuous way. There is not much to be gained by indulging in regrets for the past: the settlers have shown unmistakeably that they are opposed to the harbor works being hung up at this critical juncture, and it is time a feeling of unanimity were inspired amongst us on such salient matters. Now it has been definitely decided to take a poll, it would be a severe blow to the district if by any mischance* it were not successful. A short time ago we commented on the fact of all the meetings being announced for one night, but it is considered this is the only course possible under the Act, and it really matters little now as the informal meetings have given every opportunity for a full and free expression of opinion from the settlers and citizens, and the memorial is clear evidence of how public opinion has been moulded. Still there must be great caution exercised, and when the polling day arrives it is to be hoped that every effort will be made to have every possible vote recorded. The meetings to-morrow night are really of little consequence, but it will not do to allow the interest to flag or hold things too cheaply.
