THE TIMES ON THE STATE OF THE COUNTRY. ANOTHER M.P. IMPRISONED. STRAIGHTFORWARD REMARKS BY A JUDGE. London, Oct 27 The Times, in an article on the condition Of affairs in Ireland, says the etate of the country is a source of trouble at the Vatican, Where the attitude of the Irish priesthood is regarded as rebellious. Jeremiah Gessan, M P. for East Kerry, has been arrested on a charge of inciting tenants at Clenary to join the “ Plan of Campaign.” October 29. Mr .1. J. O'Kelly, Member for Roscommon, who v u sentenced to four months' imprisonment for inciting witnesses to refuse to give evidence under the Crimes Act, appealed against the vrrdict, and to day the case was argued in a higher Court. The Judge, in reducing the sentence from f.u t> two months, expres ed syinpoliy with Mr O'Kelly, but said the law, however obj.-e tionable, must be respected. He beli ved that language similar to that used bv Mr O’Kelly would pass unnoticed if used in England, and His Honor agreed with the prisoner that if such an Act as the Crimes Act was brought into operation in England it would be regarded with suspicion.
