pEKISTCHURCH, last night. No important work was done at Riccarton this morning. British Lion and St. Clair galloped two miles in good style. Vandal accomplished the same journey at a steady pace. Lorraine did not move so as usua over the Cup distance. Strenuous did not make a very favorable impression on his first apperance. Cuirassier and Leopold went twice round steady, and Son of a Gun covered a mile and a quarter at half speed. Exchange traversed the cup distance alone, and Chain Shot and Engagement made the same journey. Manton was joined by Kuby in the last half mile of a steady gallop over the cup course, but they were not extended, Silvermara arrived last night but was not out before breakfast this morning.
Two nasty accidents occurred on Tuesday last, and in regard to both cases miraculous escapes havs to be recorded, An employee at the 4uoan Company’s, store had -his apron qaught in the belt attached to the gas engine, and had his clothes not torn asunder at the critical moment he would have met with a horrible death. Mr Robert Nock bad also a sensational experience. He was bringing in a load of firewood, when the horses (a team of three) toos fright at a skittish saddle horse just in front, Mr Nook was sitting on the top of the firewood, which was jolted out in all directions, the driver being also ejected, but still holding on bravely to the reins in spite of the wood flying about. One piece struck hius severely on the chest, and he Was exposed to a running fire, but he held on, add nearly had the horses reined in, when ene of Mr Barker's men gave timely assistance. The affai* was an instance of wonderful pluck and coolness in a most dangerous predicament
