The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, Octber 16, 1888. MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

Be just and fear not; * Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

From the nominations received on Saturday for the vacant seat in the Borough Council, it is evident that a healthy interest continues to be taken in our municipal affairs. The candidates nominated were Messrs Ponsford, Taylor, and File. The two former gentlemen were the defeated candidates in the recent contest, and Mr File is sufficiently well known to perhaps every ratepayer in the Borough. Many anticipate that the contest will be a very close one, and Messrs Ponsford and Taylor are certainly to be admired for their perseverance in again coming forward It shows that they value the honor sought, and that is just the spirit which it is to the interest of the ratepayers to foster. If a seat is considered worth a strong but fair contest, the victorious candidate is sure to have an equally high appreciation of the duties which he has undertaken to fulfil. The recent municipal contest was the best conducted, and there were also more votes recorded, of any of our previous municipal elections. We hope we may be able to speak as well of the approaching contest. It is many degrees less important, but that should not greatly diminish the interest in the result. If for no other reason, it is well to let our Councillors know that their actions are closely scrutinised, and that when their time to meet the ratepayers comes round, they will be judged by their works. In due course we shall select one of the nominated candidates, and commend him to the favorable consideration of the ratepayers ; if another journal persists in “ sitting on the rail,” for fear of offending any candidate, then we say it is neither creditable to the journal nor complimentary to the candidates.
