A NEW GUINEA EXPEDITION. London, Sept 29. General Mclvor is organising an expedition to New Guinea. LORD MAYOR OF LONDON. Aiderman James Whitehead has been chosen Lord Mayor elect of the city of London. SIGN OF DEPRESSION. Cotton spinners are at present only working half time. REFRACTORY ORES. Mr Robert Austen, chemist at the Royal Mint, is drawing up a report on the processes of dealing with ores at Freburg. THE WELSH GOLD MINES. The prospects of Morgan’s Welsh gold mine being a permanent payable field are considered to be assured, and it is believed It will pay 30 per cent, on the capital in* vested. RELIEF OF EMIN BEY. The London Press condemns Germany for the lethargy shown in the despatch of the projected expedition to relieve Emin Bey. It is pointed out that while the promoters are talking over the details the officials are in all directions GLADSTONE AND HOME RULE. Mr Gladstone refused to subscribe towards the Scotch Home Rule agitation because he was afraid such a movement at the present juncture would prejudice the prospects of Irish Home Rule. THE OBNOXIOUS DIARY. Berlin, Sept 29. The Minister of Justice has given orders for the prosecution of the publisher of the diary which has given so much trouble, the Emperor having consented to this step being taken. It is supposed that Professor Giffsen, of Hamburg, is compiler of the diary. PROFESSOR GIFFKEN LEFT THE COUNTRY. Hrofessor Giffkeu has gone to Heligoland. GENERAL WAR PREDICTED. Vienna, Sept 29. Count Viera predicts a general war.
