A Peculiar Point.
Ar the inquest yesterday morning Mr Lucas attended and explained his absence on Wednesday last. He said it was not out of any disrespect that he did not attend to the summons. He was under the impression that be was exempt under the Coroner's Act, being a Justice of the Peace. He would leave the matter in the Coroner's hands. He rueant no disrespect to the Court. He thought Sergeant Bullion’s remarks were a little Uncalled for in asking that he (Mr Lucas) should be made an example of, and did not think the remark should have been made. It was not through any captiousnesa that he did net obey the summons. Sergeant Bullen said Mr Lucas thought he was exempt under the Act, but he was not, and in courtesy to the Bench he should have attended, as they did in the Supreme Court, to explain his absence. Mr Lucas did not do either one thing or the other, but took a high hand, and said be waa not liable. His Worship said he did not think that Mr Lucas would wilfully commit any act of contempt against the Court, Evidently he Was under the impression that he was exempt M a Justice of the Peace. It would have been bolter for Mr Lucas to have made a personal explanation. The matter was then allowed to drop.
