Mary Van’s Franks.

SHE TRIES TO “ELIMINATE” THE MATRON. WHILE THERE’S LIFE THERE’S HOPE. Gisbobne people need hardly be told who Mary Von is. If she is not well known otherwise she is familiar to us by her notorious reputation—nor does she intend to jet us forget her; much [esq so in the case of those who come within practical range of her charmed circle, We may talk hard things about the Americans, but there is no denying they are content to suffer much when they allow such a murderess to remain on their hands Mary is now serving her sentence at San Francisco for the murder of the late W. G. Bishop, formerly of Gisborne. News by the last mail informs us that the notorious woman made a desperate, though unsuccessful, attempt ot murder the matron of the prison in which the former is incarcerated. The only reason for this attempt was that Mary thought that if she could carry out her plan, she could strip the matron of her clothes, transfer them to her own bndy, and by this disguise manage to elude suspicion until she had made good her escape. However, the fiendish wretch was toiled in her brutal object, and will have her punishment increased for attempting to put her horrible plan into execution. Mary’s later conduct ha. been such as to completely disprove the supposition that was held by some when she was first convicted, thst she was more sinned against than sinning.
