ITALY AND ABYSSINIA.
Italy, in her dealings will) the Abyssinians. is having one of the many bitter experiences which have fallen to the lot of England in cir. cumstances having a great similarity. Months ago, when it was stated that the Italian Government had acquired a satisfactory footing in Ayssinia we expressed the fear that that country was engaged in an undertaking which would be the cause of enormous trouble before it was accomplished, and that view ha 8 been fully verified. Italy has certainly not acted all through with wisdom, and her policy requires a strong defence to commend it to a reasonable person, but her errors are those which English statesmen have fallen into time after time, and as one of England’s most reliable allies, we hope she may eventually come out of the affair successfully. The object she is striving for is well worth attaining, provided that is done without dishonor, but the price will be dear, and late telegrams prov e how dangerous it ia to to rely on a false security.
