Discovery of Gold.
Much excitement was caused in town yesterday by the reports that were in circulation of a discovery of gold at the Mahia, and the re* ports were so enlarged in some cases that many concluded the whole thing was a hoax. Even at the present time it is hard to say whether there is much in the discovery. Certainly the information conveyed by Mr H. McLean should be reliable, as the source is well-known to be trustworthy, and information from other sources convey the idea that the prospects are very promising. On the other hand messages treating lightly of the subject have also been received, and we must view the matter cautiously until more definite information is to hand.
