New South Wales.

A Thargomindah telegram states that a remarkable immigration of cats is now taking place in that district Thousands upon thousands of cats are advancing north and infesting thebush. It is supposed they are following the armies of rats which recently passed through the district. They are very poor in condition, and it is hoped that they will keep down the rabbits, which are still pouring into the colony through the 17 mile gap in the rabbitproof fence. A mixed train travelling on the Southern hne, on the 6th, met with a serious accident. Just before reaching Gunning, the train was travelling at the rate of 30 miles an hour, when an axle of one of the trucks broke, throwing the trucks, carriages, and guard's van off the line. The derailed vehicles were dragged about a mile and a half, swinging most dangerously and at times grazing the rocks which pointed out from the sides of the cutting. The train was brought to a standstill about a hundred yards before reaching a bridge outside Gunning station, and a terrible .calamity was only narrowly averted. Strange to say, all the vehicles retained an uprighi position, and 12 passengers who were in the carriages escaped with a severe fright and aconsiderable jolting Some of the carriages were considerably knocked about, the brakes were all broken, and the damage to the rolling stock is estimated at £5OOO. The line was torn up, the rails were thrown out of guage for a long distance, and altogether the permanent way is in a great disorder.
