SLY GROG SELLING.

THE OFFENDERS HEAVILY FINED. Napier, last night.

At the B.M. Court this morning before Captain Preece, Norman and Nellie Fitzgerald were charged with sly grog selling. Three charges were preferred against them, and the case lasted the best part of the day Messrs Dick aud Cresswell appeared for defendants, who pleaded not guilty. The defendants keep a tobacconist shop in Emerson street, and the police said it was a well-known brothel, tobacco and cigars being sold merely as a blind. Sergeant Cullen, accompanied by Constable Lawless ! and Detective Grace made a rush on ine premises last week and seized a large quantity of whisky and beer. After nearing the evidencs of two witnesses to whom liquor had been sold the R.M. sa : d he intended fining defendants heavily. Nellie Fitzgerald would be fined the sum of; £25 with costs 7s or in default one months imprisonment with hard labor Norman Fitzgerald would be fined £2O with I cost* 9s and witnesses’ expenses, £4 2s, on the first charge or one month’s hard'labor in default, and on the I second charge £25 with costs 9s, or a mouth with hard labor,. the second I term of imprisoument to commence at I the expiration of the first.
