Presentation to Captain Boylan.
The presentation of an illuminated testimonia I to Captain Boylan took place in the Argyl 1 Hotel on Thursday evening, whm a smoke concert was held, a large number of volunteers being present. Lieut. Kenny occupied the chair. The Chairman, in making the presentation, said the Battery was never in sueh an efficient condition as it was under Cajtain Boy lan’s command. He believed if Captain Boylan had remained in command the Battery would continue in the same efficient condition. It remained with them to do their best to keep up that efficiency. In concluding, he hoped that at some future dtte they might have the honor of serving under Captain Boylan. (Cheers.) Sergt.-Major Sage stated that Captain Boylan was the gentleman who induced him tn pin the Battery, and had always been an officer whom he was proud to serve under. As a Battery man he was glad to see that Captain Boylan’s services had been recognised n such a way that they could never be forgotten. , Sergt. Miller also eulogised Captain Boylan’s services to the corps, and the manner in which the internal affairs of the Battery had been conducted under his management, resulting in the corps being now in a good financial condition. He hoped that when they elected a captain they would get as good a man as Captain Boylan was. Captain Boylan’s health was then drunk with enthusiasm. Captain Boylan, in reply, said : It is impossible for me to find words to express what I feel at the way in which you have been good enough to deal with my services in connection with the Battery, and for this handsome address you have presented to me to-night. I am sure it will always be with a feeling of gratification that I will remember this present occasion, and that in resigning from a corps with which I have worked so long, together with the members of the Battery, that I carry with me the good feelings and favorable opinion expressed in this illuminated address. That the Battery, from its zealous attention to discipline, has turned out, as specified in this address, one of the most efficient Batteries in the colonies, will ba admitted on-all sides ; but it is not for you to suppose that this could have been done unless it had been borne out by the support of the members, who showed a willingness to place their Battery among the first of the Artillery corps in New Zealand. I sincerely trust that the same spirit tb ot already exists will maintained in the future, and that the Battery will hold that honorable position which it does at present amongst the volunteer forces. Your kindness in having elected me honorary captain for life, and the kind wishes expressed therein, I sincerely feel, and all I can say is that it will afford me the greatest pleasure to render all the assistance I can for the interest and welfare of the J Battery as long as I live. Again thanking you for doing me the honor of referring to my past services, I shall conclude by wishing success and prosperity to the corps. (Applause,) During the evening songs were given by Sergt.-Major Sage, Bugler Lewis, and Gunner Langford, and a recitation by Captain Boylan. ______
