POLITICAL NOTES.
(fbom ovb own cobbespondent.) Wellington, last night. The House was in a capital humor on Friday night and agreed without debate to the second readings ot the Middle Island HalfCaste Grants Bill, the Fencing Act Amendment Bill, the Regulation ot Local Elections Act Amendment Bill, the Volunteer Drillsheds and Lands Bill, the State Forests Act Amendment Bill, the Ellesmere Lake Land Bill, and the Puhoi Settlers Bill. The probabilities are the Cabinet will de* side not to press the Chinese question further this session, recognising that it would be futile to ask for a further conference With the Lords, Should there be a large influx of Chinese—which some hon members appear to dread—the country will reoognise that the Council are responsible for no restrictive measures being adopted. The Government do not think it desirable to increase the limit of the time from three months to one year during which actions can be brought against Harbor Boards. In the schedule to the Tariff Bill the duty on bacon is put down as 2d ad valorem in* stead of 2d per lb.
