London, July 5. The libel action, O’Donnell v. the Times, resulted in a verdict being returned for the defendants with costs. O’Donnell called four witnesses, but their evidence was immaterial. Mr Webster, in his speech for the defence, challenged the Parnell party to bring an. action against the Times. The reading of the various letters caused a profound sensation. The steamer Essex arrived at Ismailia, the half-way port in the canal, where the hold was filled with water to keep the fire in check. The vessel soon afterwards sank at her moorings. The Berlin correspondent of the Times states that a large vote has been placed on the Prussian estimates in aid of Neumeyer’s Antarctic expedition.
Lord Knutsford is awaiting a detailed despatch regarding the conclusions arrived at by the Chinese conference held in Sydney, before submitting their proposals to the Cabinet. The details of the specifications have not been allowed to transpire. The surplus of £70,000 of the women’s offering has been applied to the Queen’s fund for nursing the London poor. The House of Lords has agreed to an amendment in the Liability of Trustees Bill allowing the funds to be invested in colonial stocks when four per cents, are quoted at 105 and others at equivalent prices. One thomsand American banks combined to float a company object to insure the bank depositors against loss. All the iron mills of western America, with the exception of twelve, have beeu closed owing to a wages dispute. One hundred thousand workmen are affected by the strike, Ths French banks assisted to float the Panama lottery loan. A French .expedition is being despatched for the relief of Stanley. The Servian Synod has granted a decree dissolving the marriage of King Milan and his wife Natalie.
