The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published Every Tuesday, Thursday, AND Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, July 17, 1888. WHITMORE TO THE RESCUE.

Be just find fear not • Tj*t all the endti thou nhn'et at be thy country’s. Thy God's, and truth's.

BoMe of our legislators aro fond of tinkering in matter* with which they are not oonver•anti and Sir G, Whitmore is interesting himself in the Gisborne Harbor affair in a way which illustrates his eelflahneas without concealing hit ignorance. We have always lamented the position which was chosen lor the works, and there has been much in connection with the management of affairs which haa left room for criticism ; but the question is placed on an altogether different footing when the district is slandered by a politician it Sir Gi Whitmore's stamp, In the first.

place it is absolutely false to say there is only one municipal body in the place. Not one member of either body is a member of the three local bodies, though according to the Act the Mayor and Chairman of the County Council must also be members of the Harbor Board. In the local bodies the country is well represented, and the country members of the Board have always been strong supporters of the present harbor scheme. If we are not much mistaken it was the Government that Sir G. Whitmore supported that gave permis sion for a deviation from Goode’s plans, and the same Government was much to blame for the way this district has been neglected with regard to road-making. Sir G. Whitmore’s remarks are an insult to the district, and are but characteristic of the selfish motives with which he and Mr Ormond are prompted. They are of a class that would monopolise all the lands of the district if they could manage it, and then when it comes to a question of taxation they are just the ones to shuffle it off on to the poor man’s products. The harbor is just now in a peculiar position' and it is a matter for grave consideration whether the works should be continued, but no one can impute dishonesty to the members and officers of the Board. We should like to see the matter taken up by men in whom more reliance can be placed than in the Whitmore-Ormond coterie.
