BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Council met on Tuesday evening. Presents Crs Lucas, Morgan, Joyee, Townley, Dunlop, Ponsford, Lewis, and Whinray. Cr Townley was voted to the chair, and the minutes of the previous ordinary and annual meeting were confirmed. The Mayor then ar. rived and took the chair, A LITTLE BILL. An application was received from the Audit office for the payment of £6. costs of auditing accounts for the* half year. Agreed that the amount be paid. A MISTAKE. Mr J. W. Matthews wrote calling the attention of the Council to the fact that a mistake had been made in regard to the tank question, the Bank’s name having been used in place of Mr Matthews’ own name.

The minutes having been previously corrected, that was considered sufficient. overseer’s report. The Overseer reported as follows • Metal: The metal that was brought in for a test from the two quarries has been placed on Read’s Quay at a cost of £5 10s.—Bridges : Nothing has yet been done to the bridges. — Kaiti: Mr Maude having fenced in his section on the Kaiti eide it cuts off the approach that was used as a roadway leading to the harbor woiks. I have put in an old box culvert and a few loads of soil, making a temporary crossing until your Council decide what to do.— Day labor: £4 0s 6d, as per vouchers. With reference to the bridges the Committee left the matter for the Council to decide, as they had found Messrs Brown and Smaill’s second estimate much more than they had anticipated. Cr Joyce said the second estimate was nearly double that given at first, and all the items were almost the same. As Messrs Brown and Smaill’s offer was not to be made public the Council went into Committee to consider the matter, bu' it was eventually decided, on the motion of Cr Townley, seconded by Cr Joyce, that tenders be called for the necessary repairs to the Turanganui and I aruheru bridges, and that Mr Drummond, as isted by the Road Overseer, prepare the specifications to be submitted to the County Engineer. Cr Whinray thought something should be dune with respect to the approaches to the bridge. There was some discussion as to the cost, when Mr Warren said that the County Engineer had estimated the cost at £25, and had said there was no use in attempting to do anything with less money.

Crs Joyce and Townley thought the work could be done for lees, but after discussion it was agreed to pay half the amount estimated by the County Engineer, prouided the Bounty Council paid the other half; ACCQVKTS. Accounts totalling £7O 7s were passed for payment. BEORBATION GBOUXD, Cr Morgan called attention to the state of the recreation ground, and thought the matter should be attended to. Councillors agreed, and Crs Lewis, Morgan and Lucas were appointed a Committee to make enquiries as to the present tenure of the reserve, and report at next meeting.
