George and Dr McGlynn.
THEIR LATEST PREACHING, Ths Rev. J. B. Fox, Incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, made a very interesting discourse on Sunday evening upon tha doctrine which is now being preached by Henry George, assisted by Dr McGlynn (an excommunicated Catholic priest), on the basis of " Tha Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man." A paragraph relating to the question was given by us on Thursday lastTne rev. gentleman said this was an ancient doctrine of Christianity, new to the world when first promulgated, but fully acceptoii and to a great extent realised in the Church, though tha bond between Christian and Christian was closer oven than that of brotherhood. r The Church had confined itself too much within its own limits, though the destiuction between the Church and tha world was real and not to be ignored. We should be thankful for any " enthusiasm of humanity," only desiring that all its forces should be united under the Christian banner and animated by Christian inspiration. The world was not ripa for indiscriminate acting on the “ Fatherhood of God, and the brotherhood of man,” for men did not generally feel towards God or treat Him as their Father nor did they regard their fellow men as brothers. In all parties there were politicians of two sorts, the earnest and the selfish; so there would be among those who would take up this new cry. Quoting from a modern writer who said that " the Bivalists failed for want of regeneration of society and the Socialists failed for the want of regeneration of the heart," the preacher went on to urge that the regeneration of the heart of man under the mighty agency of Christianity was neeued in order that external remedies might be effective ; not the knife of the surgeon, but the medicine of the physician; and to press upon his hearers to look to their own hearts first and then do what they could for the regeneration of others’ hearts if they could not do much for their external condition. The splendid force of charitable inclination produced by Christian enthusiasm needed only direction and was being better directed every day.
