There was some amusement over the Newton flogging case, when it was brought on by Sir Julius Vogel, though there is no doubl ihe thing has been much overdrawn. Vogel said that the flogging of girls and boys in public schools would lead them to flog their wives when they grew up. He said ha wa? going to aid the mother of the child in insti. luting a prosecution. The Minister of Education said Sir Julius was “ a superb champion of exaggeration.” Sir Julius Vogel has started a subscription list to enable legal steps to be taken. In reply to a question by Mr Lawry as to native land titles, the Premier said the Government would, in their amended Native Lands Administration Act, use every effort to complete the title of persons who had legitimate claims to native lands, and would use their best endeavors to settle native land matters.
The Native Affairs Committee have recommended that the application for a rehearing d the Waipiro case be granted.
The Public Works Statement is to be brought down on Tuesday. The Minister for Lands is preparing a Bill for the relief Of deferred payment settlers I he Bill is intended to give . enu ne relief without allowing them to repudiate their in gagements.
