RUSSIA IN THE EAST.

I’he insatiate spirit of ambition tha is such a prominent characteristic the Czar of Russia and his counsellors and officers is hurrying them into a war, with either Germany or England Sometimes it seems that England will have to cross swords with the great Northern nation, and sometimes jl appears as if Germany were the power that would have to fight it out with Russia. And so this ugly see-saw game continues,

It was only a few days ago that we learnt that Germany and Russia were making reprisals on each other in the direction of imposing prohibitive duties on articles imported from the other. >ow we are informed that the Czar and the Ameer of Bokhara are playing a little game between them'selves. There is hardly the slightest doubt butthat the Ameer will lose, and were it not for the fact that his subjects entertain a decided objection to getting further under the wing of the Russian eagle, the game would be faster.

The importance of Bokhara to Russia is manifest. Lying as it does on the northern frontier of Afghanistan, it affords to Russia another centre from wnich to make a descent upon India, and it is well within the bounds of possibility that the further advance upon the Indian Empire will be by way of Northern Afghanistan, or it is not at all unlikely that simultaneously wild hordes of horsemen drawn from the various tribes of Central Asia will sweep from the north, while the Russian Army will advance from the west.
