"Puff" on Panama Canal.

De Lesseps aaya he'll have the Panama Canal partially open in Tebruary, 1890! Only two years and a quarter ahead I He’s got his work cut out for him ! Don’t you think it’s all froth ? Mere French gasconade ? Not a bit of it 1 There’s no gasconadt about De Lesseps! He’s an enthusiast, but not a boaster! He opened the Suet Canal eighteen months before the date he’d fixed, and he won’t be much behind with the Panama Canal! My stars won't there just be jubilations in France if he succeeds! Aye, and not only in France ! The Panama Canal will benefit Great Britain and her colonies more than it will France!

New Zealand ought to be in the swim I So it will I The Canal will make New Zealand the boss colony of Australasia I The Yankees won’t like it! Then they may lump itl But if they only knew it, the opening of the Canal will do them a lot of good, too ! But they'll have to drop their stupid Protection and go in for Freetrade, else the British will walk round them like a cooper round a cask 1 They hav'nt any shipping worth apeakin'g of now, but they won’t have any at all after the Canal is opened, if they don't hurry up and throw down the barriers to commerce I Do you think that will be the effect of it ? I’m sure it will! That’s why the Protectionists in America are howling ■o against De Lesseps !
