“ENGAGED."

Wx had the pleasure of witnessing a dress rehearsal of “ Engaged ” last night, and were surprised at the proficiency attained by the local troupe of amateurs who have had the courage to attempt and successfully master that great farcical comedy by the first comic writer of this., generation, Mr W. 8. Gilbert. The. personation of the close-fisted, amorous and fickle, Cheviot, by Mr Laing is a histronio feat that he may well be proud of. Mr P. Bourke, who was such a grand success as Talbot in “ Our Boys ” has been oast in a most congenial part, that of Belvauney. and he takes the piece alloted to him in a highly satisfactory manner. Symperson was simply written for Mr Morgan, and he has made a splendid thing of it in every particular, save that his voice was a little low pitched. Angus, the train wrecker, is faithfully worked up by Mr A. Barnard. Miss Shelton, as Miss Treherne, is worth seeing, her acting being perfect. Mrs Brown is all at home as the Scotch lassie, and must be complimented on the life thrown into her part. Miss Adair, as simp’s little Minnie, shows careful study in her part. Mrs Sunderland puts her whole soul into the chraacter of the Lowland widow. Miss King who plays lady’s maid, has 'two nice little parts, and takes them well. Mr Crawford, as the blustering Major Gilliouddy, is really good. The performance shonld be welj attended.
