A Valuable Horse.
Mr Joseph Osborne, in a communication to the 'Field,' contributes a recapitulation of Hermit’s doings since he quitted the post for the paddock. Hermit was put to the stud in 1878 at Blanbley Hall, Sleaford, Lincolnshire, at the very moderate charge of 20gs. but he at once attained such success that his fee rose by quick successive steps to 50gs., lOOgs., 150g5., and 200g5., at which fee it stood until last year, when it was increased to 250g5., a fee unprecedented in the annals of the British stud. During the thirteen ▼ears Hermit has been at the stud, he has begotten 307 foals, which are returned in the pages of Weatherby as having won 653 races, of the value of £267,374. This is an immense sum to be won in thirteen years by the progeny of the horse, ana speaks volumes tor the prosperity of the British turf. I think it a great pity the N.Z. Stud Coy. did not secure a son of Hermit in place of Bword Dance.
