THE TE KOOTI SCARE.
WELLINGTON PAPERS IN A FROTH.
MAJOR PORTER CONDEMNED. HIS SUSPENSION ADVISED BY PRESS. MORE LYING REPORTS. It ha* so often been incumbent on us to correct the absurd and ignorant blunders of a paper published in this district and called the Poverty Bajr Herald, that the practice has become repugnant to us. For this reason we did not think it worth space to contradict a report (I !) that was given of Major Porter’s speech in reference to the Te Kooti affair But unfortunately the report has had an influence outside, though in this district the thing would have been taken for just what it was worth; The lateness of tile hour at which the message has been received prevents further comment on our part, except a distinct denial from our reporter that Major Porter used the words attributed to him. Our correspondent wires as follows Wellisgton, last night;
The Wellington papers comment strongly on Major Porter’s remarks relative to the expected visit to the Poverty Bay district of Te Kooti.
The Press says :—" We hope the Government will promptly call upon Major Porter to answer his most improper and unsoldierlike address to the soldiers of Gisborne. It was bad enough icr thd Maoris to go vapouring about the country uttering threats of murder or violence; but for an officer of volunteers, to whom is entrusted the guardianship of the district, to practically suggest the advisability of shooting one of the Queen’s subjects dead, and brag ot his intention of • very quickly settling matters with his old enemy ’ is altogether mo ntr jus aid absuid tnl the Ooiiiniander-in.Chief ought immediately to suspend Major Porter from duty and offe r him an opportunity of explaining his extraordinary conduct, and if his explanation is not satiefactory he should at once be deprived of the commission, which he appears totally unfit to hold.”
