“Buff” on Irish Question.
Cue dismissed! « O'Brien and Sullivan got off, because the case for the Crown was n: t proved! That’s all right! The Crown lawyers must be duffers to have brought a charge they could not prove! The scene in Court must have been fine fun ! The police and the City officials scrimmaging for the sword and mace, and the aldermen and priests shouting '• Bravo ' Hold on I" Is there another country in the world where sueh goings on would be permitted and treated as a joke ? Not one ! ' hat’s the beauty of it! The Moonlight snuffed out I Calltaan( a Moonlighter, hu split on his pals, and blown the whole conspiracy ! I don't think much of aneh evidence as bis 1 lie’s a convicted thief, a deserter and a drunkard! That's enough to damn him in the eyes of all decent folks! The Government oughtn't to touch such a scoundrel with a pair of tongs! I wouldn’t believe a word he said, if Be swore it on the cross on his bended knees ! That’s true I His character’s against him, but it cuts both wavs * There's no doubt of his being a Moonlighter, for he was taken with a gang of ’em in the act of committing a murder! They didn't mind his bad character as long as he was one of themselves, but as soon as he peaches they denounce him as a convict 1
You mean their very argument against him condemns "the Moonlighters themselves ® Yes, it shows what sort of material the organisation is composed of! Thev were going to shoot all the caretakers in Kerry, but they’re bowled out now ! I expect Callman knows all about everything ! Don’t you think "this Callman has been a spy all along, and only joined the Moonlighters in order to betray them?
Very likely! It’s a dirty business '
