The Rifle Association.

Captain Sommerville, of the New Zealand Bifle Association, is sending out circulars to members of the New Zealand Bifle Association containing suggestions for the 1888 meeting. They are as follows :—That the programme shall be divided into stages, the first to consist of eight matches, somewhat similar to last year's programme, up to and including the 600 yards’ range, the aggregate prizes to be awarded to the four highest in this stage, as follows:—Silver medal and £2O, silver cross and £lO, silver cross and £7, silver cross and £5. In the second stage, which is to be open only to the fifty highest aggregate in the first stage, there will be one match at ranges of 700, 800, and 900 yards, ten shots at each; and a final match for the championship, open only to the twenty highest grand aggregates, the scores of the last match to be added to the first stage, and ten shots at a 1000 yards. The prizes of the aggregate to be—Gold medal and £5O, gold star and £3O, gold star and £2O, £lO, and £5. Other suggestions are, that all but two matches in the first stage to be restricted to volunteers, shall be open to all comers, and that in these two matches volunteers shall fire in drill order, but in all others must fire in plain clothes. That a consolation be added to the programme, and a team match provided for, to be fired by twenty men teams, one from each Volunteer District. As to the Champion Belt, it is suggested that a new belt be procured, and that the clasps of the old belts form part of the fittings of the new belt, and that the shield be added to each of the old belt's clasps, the names of past winners and particulars of the cause which led to the belts being withdrawn from competition, and that the old belts be fired for by past winners only, under such conditions as the council think necessary.
