COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the County Council took place on Thursday afternoon. Present; Crs G. L. Sunderland (in the chair), J. Sunderland, Gannon,Bobbie, King, Gray, and Stubbs. barkeh's stone. A deputation from the Borough Council, consisting of Messrs Townley, Whinray, and Tucker, attended re the above question, Mr Townley spoke on the necessity of providing good metal for the streets, and said that the Borough Council would be happy to co-operate with the County Council in the matter. In order to test the question the Borough Council had called for tenders for the supply of 2OOOyd» of stone.

After a long discussion it was proposed by Mr G. L. Sunderland that a joint committee of both bodies be appointed to meet Mr Barker and go into the matter with him. This was agreed upon, and Crs Gray, Stubbs, and the Chairman were appointed to represent the County Council, the joint committee to meet Mr Barker on Thursday next, the 18th, at 2.30 p.m. The deputation then withdrew. correspondence. From Mr Thelwall, asking that the road from the Royal Hotel to the ford be repaired.—Request granted, and resolved that the Council proceed by special order to place this road under the control of the Road Board. From the Native Department) enclosing letter from Wiremu Poroa, of the Mahia, asking that the Mahia road be put in order.—Clerk instructed to write to the Native to the effect that the Council could do nothing in the matter for the present. From Mr Partridge, asking that the fence along the Waimata road be removed as the Council’s works had buried it, and offering to re-place it for £5. —Decided that Mr Partridge be offered £3 10s for the work, etherwise the Council to do it themselves. From Mr Lambert, resigning the post of Returning officer for the Waikohu Riding.—Resignation accepted, and Mr James Dover appointed. From the same, complaining that the Kaiteriki ferry was removed and that passengers now crossed through his paddocks.

Cr King explained that only foot passengers could use it. Resolved that Devery be requested to remove the ferry to the upper site at once, and if such is not done a complaint will be made to the Licensing Bench. From the District Surveyor asking if the old road to section 88, Patutahi, had been closed.

The Engineer explained that Mr Williams had objected to closing the road.—Clerk instructed to inform Mr Weetman that the road is not closed. From Messrs Cooper and Parker re drains at Waerenga-a hika. The Engineer said that Mr Cooper had promised to give £3 towards the cost of the outlet dram.

Proposed by Cr King, and seconded by Cr Chambers, that toe work be done at a cost of £8 10s.—Carried. It was also decided to have the pond at the junction of the three roads filled up at a cost of 80s. CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS. The Chairman’s motion for the classification of roads into main and subsidiary roads was then discussed at some length. The motion m«t with some strong opposition, and it was eventually decided to hold the motion over until the next meeting of the Council.

WAIAPU INLAND BOAD. A letter was received from the Hurveyor-Genorsl deciding that the made portion of the above road is to be considered a County road.

Cr Gannon asked whether anything had been done towards metalling the Ormond-W aimata road The Engineer said that no new works could be undertaken owing to the decision of the Council, arrived at at the last meeting.
